Different cultures, religions, nationalities, clothes, food and language jostle with each other on the street.  From sari to mini skirt, from purdah to fashion labels, this, mostly, Muslim country has it all.

If you time your journey for the early months of any year, you will be rewarded with a feast of festivals, each very different. This year Hari Raya was first, followed by Thaipusam and then the Chinese New Year; all celebrated with public holidays in this seemingly tolerant country.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the event that follows the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadam and is marked by new clothes and feasting as well as gifts to the underprivileged.  If you like shopping, this is also the time of sales!

Thaipusam is the seemingly masochistic event during which Hindu devotees pierce their bodies with hooks and skewers before walking barefoot to the Batu Caves (Kuala Lumpur) or the Waterfall Temple in Georgetown (Penang)

And finally the Chinese New Year, celebrated with all the colours and noise of Asia.  Drums, cymbals, street theatre and opera as well as lion and dragon dances.

After all these, have a vacation from your holiday on an east coast island.  Mid to late February the monsoons have usually finished and I can recommend Pulau Perhentian Kecil, an island amongst the Perhentian group (a marine reserve near the Thai border).  At the Moonlight Chalets on Long Beach clichés come alive.  Think of a quiet tropical island and you will have the picture.  Palm trees, white sand, blue skies, sun, warm seas, fish, coral, butterflies, birds.  Add good food, charming hosts, who remember your name from the time you arrive, add a chalet right on the beach for less than NZ $10, no roads, vehicles or jet-skis and paradise is complete.  If you are looking for sophistication, this is not the place for you: simple, lazy and as the locals say ‘tiada masala’ – no problems.

Arriving is just the beginning of the adventure.  Two hours on a fishing boat from Kuala Besut and you will be transferred to a speedboat for the exhilarating, frightening for some, race for the shore, the final metres surfing.  Make sure valuables are in plastic.  Bags are unloaded and then the decision of which place to stay.  Along with Moonlight, names such as Symfony, Shake Shak and Tooty Frooty (no spelling mistakes by the author) invite you to come stay or eat.  If you’re lucky you may hear tales of pirates, caves, buried treasure and even a ghost or two.

Along with a resplendent resident rooster, iguanas will wander or hurry past you, geckos calls loudly during the night, palm squirrels with bottle-brush tails chase each other up and down palm trees, monkeys swing, play and call from the trees, and mid year the turtles lay their eggs followed by the hatching some 45 days later.

This year I witnessed the final monsoon storm!  48 hours of torrential rain, thunder and lightening, the beach rearranged, little creeks flood, gentle slopes and pathways become waterfalls and rivers.  The generator fails.  Palm trees sway, looking like umbrellas on a windy Wellington street.  A green wheelbarrow, a large blue plastic drum, palm tree trunks and a two-metre iguana were all swept along in the violent rush.  And then the sun returns, and island life begins again.  Snorkelling, jungle walks, reading, beach-combing, swimming, sleeping and for many guests, a necklace ’so you’ll never forget this island.’

PERHENTIAN ISLAND CHALLENGE 2009

 

On 8 October, 2009, the Perhentian Island Challenge 2009 Race was launched by YB Wan Abdul Hakim bin Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar, Deputy Chairman of the State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee, and YBhg. Dato' Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, at the Malaysia Tourism Centre in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Perhentian Island Challenge (PIC) is an annual adventure race open to the public and staged on the beautiful islands of Perhentian by PIC Adventures Sdn Bhd.

Perhentian Island Challenge 2009 is scheduled from 9th to11th October 2009. This year's event will comprise of various challenges in two categories - Elite and Novice, which will include Running, Swimming, Obstacle Course, Orienteering and various fun and games. This year's event will be different in terms of race format as from last and previous years and the Elite category will be more demanding physically and is expected to attract many serious athletes.

All finishers will be given a certificate of completion with winners and 9 runners up in each category will receive cash and consolation prizes worth in total of RM50,000! As an added gesture to encourage environmental concerns, the race organizers will organize beach clean up sessions with all participants and volunteers of PIC 2009 and the local island community.
PIC was first held in the year 2004 with only 103 registered participants. The participants have since increased greatly to over 400 in 2008. Being more than just an adventure race, PIC introduces participants and visitors to the paradise we know as Perhentian Islands with its pristine beaches and crystal waters, its vast marine life, marine activities and of course local culture and cuisine of the villagers. For the locals, PIC is an annual kampong celebration bringing together the local community with the tourism industry.

Perhentian Island Challenge has grown to such an extent for a small island that this year, the number of participants has been limited to 500. This decision is also conducive to the island's continuing conservation efforts.

For PIC 2009, sponsors include Rip Curl, the Ultimate Surfing Company, as the official sponsor for participants' race T shirts. Beverage giants such as Red Bull, Spritzer Mineral Water, 100 Plus and Sofresh have also once again shown their support in energising, hydrating and quenching our athletes. Not to mention continuous support from PowerBar for their high powered nutrition, Brooks for their super performance footwear, and the UFL team for Suunto and their precision sporting instruments, Coleman for quality outdoor equipment, and Deuter for durable backpacks. It is believed that PIC 2009 will be as successful as ever before.

Perhentian Island Challenge will keep on achieving its most important objectives of promoting the Perhentian Islands as a tourist destination and increase awareness of and promote conservation efforts on the island. Together with the support of the State Tourism authorities and Tourism Malaysia, Perhentian Island is becoming ever more popular for both local and foreign tourists. In addition, the local Government authorities have contributed tremendously ensuring the facilitation of various tourism infrastructures. All these efforts have effectively promoted Perhentian Island as is evident with the ever increasing number of new and repeat tourists.

Tuna Bay Island Resort in Perhentian Island ,

Tuna Bay Island Resort in Perhentian Island , according to Stefan, seems to be in pretty good condition. The shopping opportunities near the hotel are ok. Transportation to and from the hotel is ok. The check-in process was a pleasure. The service was excellent. There was positive feedback about the quality and taste of the food. The restaurant was was clean. The leisure time facilities offered were generally good. The bathroom in Tuna Bay Island Resort was perceived as pretty bad.

The Perhentian Islands (Pulau Perhentian in Malay)

The Perhentian Islands (Pulau Perhentian in Malay) lie approximately 10 nautical miles (19 km) offshore the coast of northeastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu.

The two main islands are Perhentian Besar (”Big Perhentian”) and Perhentian Kecil (”Small Perhentian”).

Perhentian Island is an ideal place for snorkeling and scuba diving. The islands have been gazetted as marine park, therefore fishing and collecting marine life is strictly prohibited. This also means that the rich diversity of aquatic life has been preserved and it is beautiful to experience.

    Malaysian Airlines operates daily flights to  Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport).
    AirAsia also has daily flights to Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu from LCCT in Kuala Lumpur (Low Cost Carrier Terminal).

    Kota Bharu Airport is nearer to Kuala Besut Jetty -  entry point to Perhentian Island - therefore it’s recommended to fly to Kota Bhar.

    There are daily buses from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut.
  • Kuala Besut Jetty - Perhentian Island (by Ferry, approx 45 min or 1.30 hours depending on the boat)

Note: Remember that there are no ATMs or banks in Kuala Besut or on the Perhentian Islands. Visa and Mastercard are only accepted at a few resorts. The closest ATMS are in Jerteh. So have enough cash with you.

If the sea is rough you can be assured of a bumpy ride and you may even get wet. You may need to disembark in shallow water if there is no jetty at your beach, so dress (and pack) accordingly!

Trip to Perhentian Island

A short boat trip from Kuala Besut will take you to the beautiful islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil, just 20km off the coast. With their crystal-clear aquamarine water and white-sand beaches they are among Malaysia’s biggest tourist attractions.

The smaller island, Kecil, has an abundance of cheap chalets and lively café-bars, and is popular with the younger backpacker crowd, while Besar offers higher standards of accommodation and a quieter, more relaxed ambience. The undecided can cross the strait from island to island for around RM10 (about five to 10 minutes).

The more-expensive resorts on Besar have excellent restaurants, with seafood and barbecues being particularly good; all are open to nonguests. Over on Kecil, there are a few reasonable cafés serving up the usual burgers, pasta, beach barbecues and fish and chips. Alcohol is available in cafés, shops and hotel restaurants on both islands, though it’s not always advertised and you may have to ask for it. Prices are, naturally, higher than on the mainland.

Activities on the islands include snorkelling and diving, jungle walks and the always popular self-basting on the beach.

Note that many places on both islands charge ‘high-season’ prices, usually from late May to September, and sometimes on weekends year-round. Prices quoted here are for the high season. These islands basically shut down during the monsoon (usually from mid-November to mid-February) although some hotels remain open for hardier tourists. However, a few of the cheaper places don’t bother opening until April or even later.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights with my son's family, 2 boys 2 and 4 yers of age. The beach is beautiful, water is clean and the snorkeling was great. Rooms at the resort were clean, very close to the beach and comfortable. We ate all our meals at the resort where prices were reasonable and the food good. There are other dining options.

You have to travel a bit to get there but it was worth it.

We had a fantastic stay at the resort. The staff were very friendly if a little bit laid-back at times. When we arrived there was no-one there to meet our boat and our driver had to resort to shouting at the guys on reception to get their attention. In the end we got ourselves off the boat which wasn’t a problem. The boat ride over had been great fun. There were only a few of us on a speed boat with two 200hp engines. The driver had us going a full throttle and we crashed over the waves on the 25 min trip to the island.

We paid extra for a semi suite on the beach – which was definitely worth it. I had a walk round the rest of the resort and some of the chalets at the back looked a bit tatty. There was also a funny smell down the far end of the resort past reception (stagnant water?). When we arrived we had not been allocated connecting chalets for us and the kids. I queried this and they changed them without a problem. We arrived early (12 noon), which was good for making changes. However, we had to wait for our rooms because check in time is not until 3pm. We got our rooms at 2pm so we had a leisurely lunch in the restaurant while we waited.

The chalet was clean and comfortable. The connecting chalets are the best because they are closest to the beach. We had a lovely veranda where you could sit and drink tea looking out at the clear blue sea. The walls are a bit thin. Luckily it was only our kids whose noise we had to put up with. If they’d been someone else’s it could have been annoying.

The food is OK. You can choose from a standard menu (with European or Malyasian options) which is limited or a buffet. We had the menu for lunch and buffet in the evening. The buffet tries to cater for all tastes and so is a mish mash of cultures. However, there was usually something that suited both me and the kids. Food is quite expensive (about 50RM a head).

The beach is beautiful. The resort pretty much has the whole of a beach to itself. There is another resort at one end but this is on the rocky bit. We went in high season and the resort was full. However, the beach was pretty quiet. Most people were in the sea or out on boat trips. There are reefs at either side of the bay where you can see lots of fish (hire snorkels at 10RM a day from the dive shop). Unfortunately a lot of the coral on the reefs looks dead.

We went on two boat trips. The first to shark point and turtle point (30RM per person) was good and we saw both sharks and turtles. The second trip was even better. We took a boat out to Rawa island (40RM per person) which is uninhabited. The sea here is crystal clear and there is lots of coral. We also stopped at a lighthouse where you can see huge shoals of anchovies. The boat rides in themselves are fun. They have speed boats which they race around in.

We also did a half day Discover SCUBA Diving course for complete beginners. The instructors were very helpful and friendly. The diving was great but my ears complained about it.

The resort provides free safety deposit boxes which we made use of because we had heard tales of robberies on the islands. The resort takes credit cards, which was just as well because we hadn’t brought enough cash to the island to pay for everything we did.

I'm not giving this five on one point - the food is shocking, and everything that you buy at the hotel is expensive/ overpriced.
This isn't a problem though, you get everything you need just round the corner 5 minutes walk, and the accomodation and location more than make up for it. The beach is the best, and there's quite good snorkling - we saw a good diverstiy of fish, but not the density that we'd seen at Pulau Tioman (Bagus Place - good honeymoon/couples spot btw).
We had been at Mama's place - a confused booking having been perplexed by all the mixture of reviews for hotels on Perhentian Besar - however, as soon as we got there, there was no shadow of a doubt that if you're honeymooning on Perhentian Besar - you stay at the PIR.

The Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are a small group of beautiful, coral-fringed islands off the coast of northeastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu, not far from the Thai border.

Perhentian (pronounced Perhen-TEE-AHN, not Perhen-SHEN) means "place to stop" in Malay, and the islands got their name as a staging point used by traders traveling from Malaysia to Bangkok.

The two main islands are Perhentian Besar ("Big Perhentian") and Perhentian Kecil ("Small Perhentian"). Kecil attracts more travellers as it has cheaper accommodation, while Besar is a little more expensive and caters more to families and those who want to avoid the backpacker party scene.

The small, uninhabited islands of Susu Dara, Seringgi and Rawa lie off Kecil. All the islands belong to a protected marine park, which means that fishing, collecting coral and littering are strictly prohibited.

This being the case, the islands are currently suffering which is soon to result in an environmental catastrophe due to the non-removal of waste, such as bottles, bags and much more.

Garbage barges in the coves/bays are generally being collected by the marine park. However, when they are not, the garbage falls off the barge, washing up on the shores of the beautiful beaches. When you arrive at the jetty in Kuala Besut, you are made to pay a marine park fee, which is used to pay for services such as this.

What is Perhentian island

Perhentian Island consists of two islands with endless stretches of palm-lined beaches, clear water sea and coral reefs. The lush rain forest on the island is just an ideal for jungle trekking. Perhentian Island travel tips

The best time to visit
The monsoon season peaks between November and March every year. You can expect more rain and rough seas and most resorts are typically closed from end October through end-February. Peak season is between July and August and prices rise accordingly. During off-peak times, rates are negotiable. You may need to book well in advance during peak time and also for public holidays and weekends. Note that most budget resorts do not accept bookings and handle guests on a walk-in basis only.

Climate
Equatorial with fairly uniform temperatures year-round, ranging from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF). Humidity is high (85-95%). Annual rainfall varies from 2,000mm to 2,500mm and most rain can be expected between November and February.

Clothing
Very casual. There are no dress restrictions on the islands and light cotton clothing, t-shirts and shorts would be suitable. In some villages and rural areas, modest clothing is more appropriate. Topless sunbathing for women is not acceptable. Terengganu is an Islamic state and it is best to dress modestly when in doubt.

Currency and credit cards
The Malaysian currency unit is Ringgit (RM) and sen, where 100 sen equals one Ringgit. US$ 1 is roughly RM 3.20 (Check www.oanda.com for up to date exchange rates). Foreign currency can be converted at banks and money changers at the airport and in Semporna.

Visitors are not permitted to take more than RM 1000 in Malaysian currency out of the country and no more in foreign currency than was brought in.
There are money changers on the island but you can expect a rather poor rate.

There are no banks or ATMs on the island or in Kuala Besut. Some resorts and dive centres accept VISA and Mastercard but it is best to have enough cash with you to cover your expenses while at the island. The closest ATMs and banks can be found in Jerteh (15 km from Kuala Besut).

كنا أول ذاهب الى البقاء في ألوان مائية -- ودققت في 3 ساعات في وقت لاحق ثم سحبه وإيداعه في Perinthian Isalnd منتجع. شاطئ رائع -- فقط لا يكفي المتسكعون على الشاطئ ولكن قد الحصير حتى لا مشكلة. فندق رائع مع القرود والسحالي ، squirrals والخفافيش في كل مكان. الغرف في حاجة الى بت تصل درجات لكن نظيفة ومنعشة المناشف قدمت كل يوم. المشكلة الوحيدة هي أن الماء هو اللون الأصفر والفندق يحتاج إلى تثبيت flter (لا يسبب مشكلات صحية ، وأنا كذلك هو زوجي بعد أسبوع بعد البقاء هناك لمدة أسبوع). مجنون قليلا ولكن ادارة الفندق ليسوا على استعداد لانفاق المال على flter على الرغم من أنها فقط تكاليف MYR2500 aboyt (GBP500). الفطور كان لطيفا وغير قادر على تقديم شكوى هناك.... بيد أن جميع المواد الغذائية الأخرى في الفندق هو المرعب -- الباردة ، دهني ، لا طعم له وexpenisve. ولكن مهلا لمدة 10 دقيقة مشيا على الرصيف ملموسة في نهاية الشاطئ وأنت في مشاهدة المرجان -- كبير في الغذاء. الكحول لا يخدم إلا إذا كنت تمشي الى المطعم ويمشي على شاطئ على الجانب الاخر ومن ثم السير في الماضي على شاطئ الكرة الطائرة صافي هناك منفذ بيع البيرة والنبيذ. ثم هناك شراء والمشي الى الوراء لمشاهدة المرجان وانهم لا عقل لك الشرب ولكن إذا كنت داخل العلب والزجاجات يجب أن تكون مكانا على الأرض انطلاقا من احترام ولكن من أنت خارج أنهم العقل didn't -- كنت مرتاحا جدا. منتجع نفسها بدت كبيرة وكانت محجوزة بالكامل في كل وقت كنا هناك.
كل ما يمكنني القول ما اذا كان Perinthian منتجع جزيرة الفندق هو لطيف والشاطئ الجميل مجرد عار عن الطعام وتصفية المياه.

History of Perhentian Island

The name "perhentian" means "stopping point" in Malay, referring to their longstanding role as a waypoint for traders between Bangkok and Malaysia. The islands were sparsely inhabited by fishermen for centuries, although tourism now accounts for most economic activity.

The Perhentian Islands appear on many maps of the nineteenth and twentieth century as 'The Station Islands'. This arises from the British colonial period, as an English translation from the Malay "point to stop".

The Perhentian Islands were also used as a refuge in the late 1900s.

Perhentian Island also has a sandy beach call "Pasir Panjang" (Long Beach). It is located at Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian). It is a very beautiful white sandy beach, crystal clear water and it is the best place for picnic.
